Every action taken by student-athletes, for better or worse, has an impact upon their peers, families and communities. Student-athletes are looked up to for their athletic talents and share an incredible power of influence as visible figures in and out of the school setting. Therefore, athletics and related school activities provide an excellent opportunity to set positive standards and examples of leadership for teammates, friends, families and fans.
Providing leadership training and ongoing support to help students be positive influences for others is imperative and the MIAA has embraced this challenge. Young people often find themselves in leadership positions because of how they are viewed by others. Leaders are often selected because of their seniority, skills and/or their popularity. Great expectations come with being selected as a leader but, in most situations, these expectations are not directly communicated and cannot be presumed.
