Javelin Safety Recommendations

The throwing area MUST be roped off and clearly marked.  Injuries are most common during warm-ups. A certified official should run warm-ups. The throwing sector should be open to groups of throwers and then closed while javelins are retrieved. Once the sector is clear it can be opened for further warm-up throws. Javelins, when not in use, should be placed on a rack or laid down flat on the ground. Injuries occur when athletes accidentally walk into the back tip of the javelin. All javelins being used in competition must have the IAAF sticker on it showing that it is one of the “new” (only javelin acceptable for competition) javelins. Officials and coaches cannot emphasis safety regarding the javelin enough.

Jim Hoar and his daughter, Kristen Polizzotto, pose together as recipients of their respective schools, Dennis-Yarmouth HS and Stoneham HS, for the 2016 Joan Doherty Indoor Track Team Sportsmanship Award. Both devoted educators and coaches, this picture shares the love the two had for the sport and one another. Kristen passed away peacefully in December 2019 from cancer.
