Fall Swimming State Championships: Wellesley Makes It Five in a Row; Acton-Boxborough Back on Top
Wellesley High School continued its dominance by winning its fifth consecutive Division 2 Fall Swimming Championship during the State Championship Meet held Sunday, November 10 at Boston University.
In Division 1, Acton-Boxborough Regional returned to the top of the podium after a one-year hiatus and picked up its third team championship in four years.
Division 1
Acton-Boxborough bookended the meet with relay victories and also added three individual championships to finish with 308 points. The Revolution was well ahead of a pack led by Brookline High School, which took second place (248). Needham High School and Newton North High tied for third (227), and Andover High School was fifth (213).
Acton-Boxborough jumped right out of the blocks with a victory in the 200-yard medley relay behind the team of Caroline Tyrrell, Lucy Tyrrell, Isabela Teixeira and Katie Baxter (1 minute, 49.77 seconds).
The same foursome then capped the Revolution’s championship victory by winning the 400 freestyle relay in 3:40.06.
Teixeira was dominant as an individual, as well, adding victories in the 50 freestyle (23.40, All-America consideration) and 100 freestyle (51.02).
Lucy Tyrrell also earned a state championship in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.29) for Acton-Boxborough.
The other individual double winner was Andrea Qie of Needham, who won the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.41) and 100 butterfly (57.11).
Among boys competitors, Ethan Corthell of Methuen High School was the winner in the 100 backstroke (1:00.98) and 100 freestyle (54.39)
Division 2
Wellesley also put forth a dominant team effort, overwhelming the 15-team field with 384 points. North Andover High School was second (225), followed by Belmont High School (200), Chelmsford High School (169) and Reading Memorial High School (163).
Again, the tone was set by Wellesley in the 200-yard medley relay as Tracey Peng, Serena Loo, Audrey Sau and Alexanda Loo finished with a winning time of 1 minute, 53.95 seconds.
Serena Loo had the lone individual win for the Raiders, taking the 100 breaststroke in 1:07.29. But much like their South sectional championship the week before, depth played a huge role in Wellesley’s team victory.
North Andover had a pair of double winners in sweeping the individual freestyle races, as Noor Abdelal took the 200 freestyle (1:58.06) and 500 freestyle (5:12.41), and Isla Amuan prevailed in the 50 freestyle (24.54) and 100 freestyle (53.46).
Mackenzie Gibbons of Academy of Notre Dame also won a pair of events, taking the 100 butterfly (57.18) and 100 backstroke (57.64).
Jackson Wagner of Milton High School and Jack Ventre of North Andover were double winners to lead the boys competitors. Wagner won the 50 freestyle (21.60) and 100 butterfly (52.12), and Ventre captured the 200 freestyle (1:46.09) and 100 backstroke (53.34).
