Getting Started as a High School Official
The MIAA does not directly train game officials. Game Officials who wish to register with the MIAA should first contact an official's board secretary or president in both the sport you are interested as well as the section of the state you wish to work. Each official’s board will have a process to train new officials. Once trained locally, on-line registration using Arbiter will begin the process of MIAA registration, which includes a background check.
Why Become an Official
- Help provide hundreds of thousands of student-athletes across Massachusetts the opportunity to compete in interscholastic sports. Without officials, there would be no athletic contests!
- Enrollment qualifies you to officiate MIAA Tournament events.
- Provides an opportunity to serve as an “Officials Representative” on MIAA Sport Committees.
Concussion Training
In support of DPH regulations, and in the best interests of student athletes, all MIAA officials must annually complete a DPH approved concussion training program as a condition for an official accepting an MIAA tournament assignment.
The National Federation of High Schools (NFHS) training module, “Concussions in Sports”, is one of the MDPH approved training programs.
