Indoor Track Meet of Champions: Natick's Emmanuella Edozien, Newton North's Reese Connors Lead Record Day

The 2025 MIAA Indoor Track Meet of Champions was held Saturday, February 22 at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center in Boston.

Girls

Natick High School junior Emmanuella Edozien tied one meet record and won a pair of events overall. Edozien captured the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.05 seconds, matching the record run from 2013, and also took first place in the long jump with a best leap of 18 feet, 8¼ inches.

Three other girls’ meet records also fell during the event.

Dennis-Yarmouth Regional senior Brenna Braham’s winning time of 38.94 seconds in the 300 meters broke the previous mark of 39.69 from 2014. Plymouth North High School senior Macey Shriner shattered the record in the 600 meters with her time of 1:30.54 – the old mark of 1:33.69 had stood since 2017. Meanwhile, New Bedford High School junior Nialonis Smith just edged past the competition in the weight throw, but her best toss of 46 feet, 9 inches was well ahead of the previous standard (45-10 ½) set in last year’s meet.

Haverhill High School had a pair of individual champions, as senior Lauren Downer won the 1,000 meters (2:52.63) and classmate Madeline Goncalves captured the shot put (41-3).

Also winning individual event championships:

  • 55 meters: Nina Kyei-Aboagye, Sharon High School (7.09)
  • Mile: Ciara Evans, Newton North High School (5:01.5)
  • 2-mile: Greta Hammer, Needham High School (10:21.48)
  • High jump: Zoe Santos, Norton High School (5-6)
  • 4x200: Methuen High School – senior Isabella Fiore, senior Kiera Fitzpatrick, junior Alysha Santana Sosa, junior Lauren Quarm (1:45.98)
  • 4x400: Amherst-Pelham Regional – sophomore Ololara Baptiste, senior Skylar Fox, junior Emilia Luetjen, senior Moriah Luetjen (4:01.49)
  • 4x800: Weymouth High School – senior Gracie Richard, junior Jessica Harding, senior Emma Daley, senior Isabella Galusha (9:20.97)

Boys

Newton North High School senior Reese Connors and Brockton High School senior Lucas Andrade highlighted another record-breaking day on the boys side.

Connors won the 300 meters in 34.36 seconds, breaking the old mark of 34.92 set in 2003. He also ran the leadoff leg on the Tigers’ record-setting 4x400 relay, with senior Alexander Hofmann, junior George Rumkin and senior Juan Talisayon following for a winning time of 3 minutes, 24.36 seconds. That shaved .31 seconds off the previous mark set in 2007.

Meanwhile, Andrade broke not only the meet record by the MIAA indoor record in the 55-meter hurdles with his time of 7.29 seconds.

Boston College High School senior Shamus Larnard won the mile in a record time of 4:11.09, more than two seconds off the previous best (4:13.56 from 2006). Evan Bedard, a senior at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School, sailed past the old mark in the long jump with his leap of 23 feet, 1 ¾ inches – edging the 2020 standard of 23-¼ .

While it wasn’t a record, Bedard’s Tanners teammate Alex Jackson won the shot put as the senior had a top throw of 60-7¾.

Lowell High School’s 4x800 relay of seniors Jovani Ubri, Raymond Dafe, Alex Rodgers and Abdul Jalloh also won in a record time of 7:56.24, more than 4 seconds faster than the old mark (8:00.62 from 2013).

Other event winners included:

  • 55 meters: Dan Killian, Winchester High School (6.46)
  • 600 meters: Ben Tavares, Weston High School (1:21.21)
  • 1,000 meters: Logan Walsh, Ludlow High School (2:30.93)
  • 2-mile: Nate Assa, Marblehead High School (9:05.3)
  • High jump: Derek Shimer, Shrewsbury High School (6-8)
  • 4x200: Billerica Memorial High School – sophomore Jacob Peck, senior Dhaethmy Dorival, junior Ben Pena, junior Gryffin Bordeau (1:30.95)
  • Weight throw: Zack Larsen, Hingham High School (85-2)
  • 1,000-meter wheelchair: Delmace Joseph Mayo, Brighton High School (2:34.43)
  • 1-mile wheelchair: Delmace Joseph Mayo, Brighton High School (4:23.34)
  • Shot put wheelchair: Angel Hernandez, Amherst-Pelham Regional (9-5)
