MIAA Boys Outdoor Track & Field Championships: Amesbury, Littleton co-winners; Acton-Boxborough, North Andover, Walpole, Wakefield, Weston on top
One division ended with rare co-champions, while the other five showcased dominant individual performances and strong team depth. In all, there were seven team champions crowned rather than the expected six at the conclusion of the 2024 MIAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Here is a look at the action:
Division 1
Acton-Boxborough Regional HS finished in first place in only one individual event, but had more than enough depth across the board to secure the team victory at Westfield State University with 70 points. St. John's Preparatory was second with 61 points, followed by Lexington HS in third (56).
Senior Christoph Osselmann took home the lone individual gold for the Revolution, winning the pole vault with a top clearance of 14 feet, 6 inches.
Division 2
North Andover HS continued its dominance of the Division 2 meet at Merrimack College in North Andover, winning a third consecutive team championship. The Scarlet Knights topped the charts with 111 points to finish clear of runner-up Wellesley HS (90), which also had a commanding edge over third-place Algonquin Regional HS (62).
For North Andover it was a matter of quantity over quality, with points throughout the lineup. The Knights earned only one individual victory from senior Mike McNaught in the pentathlon (2,768 points) while also taking first in the 4x400 meters (3 minutes, 26.44 seconds).
Division 3
Walpole HS finished as the clear winner in the team competition, finishing with 92 points at Bridgewater State University. It was a much tighter battle for second place, where Milton HS (62) outlasted Westborough HS (61).
The Timberwolves were strong in the sprints, distances, field events and relays in their solid win. Junior Austin Feener took gold in the 100 meters (11.13 seconds) and senior Sean Kerin won the 800 meters (1:57.78). Walpole also prevailed in the 4x800 (8:07.87) and got a victory in the javelin from junior Matthew St. Cyr (190-1).
Division 4
The team battle at Westfield State University was much closer overall, but in the end it was Wakefield Memorial HS that outlasted the rest of the field, compiling 78 1/2 points to edge Burlington HS (75 1/2) and Pembroke HS (73).
Senior Joseph Patt carried the Warriors to victory, capturing first place in the javelin (171-1) and also winning the pentathlon (3,268 points). Wakefield also picked up key points with a victory in the 4x800 (8:07.41).
Division 5
Weston HS rose to the occasion at Bridgewater State University, as the Wildcats' 89 1/2 points finished clear of runner-up Norwell HS (72). Norton HS was the best of the rest of the pack in third place (40).
The Wildcats got their only first-place finishes from junior Ben Tavares in the 800 meters (1:58.87), as well as the 4x400 relay team (3:24.95).
Division 6
In a rarity in MIAA track & field annals, Amesbury HS and Littleton HS each finished with 69 points to share the team championship at Merrimack College. It came down to the final race of the day, the 4x400, in which Amesbury finished third and Littleton eighth to secure their spots.
Each school had a double-winner, as Amesbury senior Aiden Donovan captured both the shot put (57-3 1/2) and discus (170-10), while the Tigers were led by senior Bona Bradshaw in the mile (4:20.6) and 2-mile (9:40.65). Senior Max Sanchez also scored a first for Amesbury in the 400-meter hurdles (57.71).
