MIAA Boys Tennis Championships: Weston continues its reign; St. John's Prep, Manchester Essex end title droughts, Westborough back on top

MIAA Boys Tennis Championships: Weston continues its reign; St. John's Prep, Manchester Essex end title droughts, Westborough back on top

One school added to a championship dynasty, a couple more ended long title droughts. A pair of showdowns were rematches that ended with different outcomes. In the end, four teams walked away from MIT's duPont Courts with the trophies to cap the 2024 MIAA Boys Tennis Championships.

Here is a look at the action: 

Division 1

St. John's Prep 4, Concord-Carlisle 1 - The top-seeded Eagles swept both doubles matches and also took a pair of victories at singles to win the program's sixth championship overall, but first since 2001.

Junior Luke Prokopis and sophomore Boris Kouzmanov swept at first singles (6-3, 7-5), and seniors Mark McDuffee and Alex Melville took home No. 2 doubles (6-2, 6-2). Junior Jake Prokopis, Luke's twin brother, added a key victory at No. 2 singles and junior Luke Free won third singles (6-2, 6-1) for the Eagles.

The Patriots got their point at No. 1 singles as senior Lucas Bikkesbakker prevailed (6-4, 6-1).

Division 1 bracket     

St. John's Prep - 2024 MIAA Division 1 Boys Tennis Champion
St. John's Prep won its first state championship in tennis since 2001, and sixth overall.

 

Division 2

Westborough 3, Duxbury 2 - The Rangers flipped the script from the 2023 state final, edging out the Dragons for their first state championship since 2016.

Sophomore Kaden Chen got the key victory for Westborough at No. 1 singles (6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (5)). Senior Srinjoy Ghosh prevailed at second singles (2-6, 6-3, 6-2), while the No. 2 doubles tandem of seniors Michael Ku and Tyler Lattanzio added the other point (4-6, 6-1, 7-5).

Junior Taylor Bettencourt took No. 3 singles for Duxbury (6-3, 6-0), and the top doubles team of senior Tucker Catalano and junior Bennett Stout also prevailed (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Division 2 bracket     

Westborough - 2024 MIAA Division 2 Boys Tennis Champion
Westborough avenged a 3-2 defeat to Duxbury in the 2023 state final, winning it all for the first time since 2016.

 

Division 3

Weston 3, Bedford 2 - A pair of Dual County League rivals squared off, and it was the Wildcats who secured a seventh consecutive state championship (first in Division 3) by outlasting the Buccaneers.

No. 1 singles player senior Max Ding clinched the win for Weston (6-4, 6-1), while sophomore Peter Chen took No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-0) and senior Magnus Starrett cruised to the third singles victory (6-2, 6-1).

Bedford swept the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles behind juniors Leo Natalizio and Charles Demeo (6-1, 6-2) and junior Logan Cox and sophomore Rylan Nichols (6-2, 7-5), respectively.

Division 3 bracket

Make it seven straight boys tennis state championships for Weston, this time after moving up to Division 3.

 

Division 4

Manchester Essex 3, Lynnfield 2 - The showdown of Cape Ann League rivals came down to the No. 2 singles match, with the Hornets avenging a regular-season loss to the Pioneers for the third state championship overall and first since 1998.

Senior Charlie Virden battled for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory and the deciding point for Manchester Essex. Senior Jan Vytopil won at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-7 (2), 6-2), and the No. 2 doubles team of senior Sander Breuker and junior Charlie Langendorf scored a 6-2, 6-0 victory.

For Lynnfield, senior Dan Levin took No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-0) and seniors Brendan Sokop and Russ Kasdon won at first doubles (7-6 (3), 4-6, 5-7).

Manchester Essex - 2024 MIAA Division 4 Boys Tennis Champion
Manchester Essex was buzzing after the Hornets took down Cape Ann League rival Lynnfield for the Division 4 title.
