MIAA Girls Basketball State Championships: Medfield, Cathedral, Hoosac Valley Repeat; Wachusett Nets First; St. Mary's Back on Top

The 2025 MIAA Girls Basketball State Championships were held March 14-16 at Tsongas Center in Lowell. Champions were crowned in five divisions, including three repeat winners and three games that featured rematches from 2024.

Here is a look at the action:

Division 1

Junior JaeLynn Scott hit the winning layup with 3 seconds to play and No. 1 seed Wachusett Regional High School avenged its 2024 title game loss with a thrilling 55-54 victory over No. 2 seed Bishop Feehan High School.

Scott’s basket sealed a game in which she finished with 31 points, tied for the third most in an MIAA girls basketball championship game. No player had cracked the 30-point barrier since Nicole Boudreau of Andover High School also scored 31 in the 2012 Division 1 final.

Bishop Feehan, which had erased a 53-46 deficit to take the lead in the final minute, had one last shot but its long 3-point attempt bounced off the backboard and rim.

In the back-and-forth battle, the Mountaineers led 13-10 after one before the Shamrocks rallied for a 32-31 edge at the break. Wachusett pushed it back to 49-44 after three quarters.

Sophomore Teegan Lanpher added 13 points for Wachusett, which won the program’s first state title after falling to Feehan (48-40) the previous year.

Feehan was led by sophomore Mollie Mullen (14 points), junior Charlotte Adams-Lopez (13) and junior Lily Singer (12).

Division 2

Medfield High School, the No. 1 seed, completed a dominant run through the bracket by once again taking down South High Community High School, 62-20.

In a rematch of the 2024 state championship game, which Medfield also won (48-42), the Warriors took complete control in the second half, breaking open what had been a 19-13 game at intermission.

Junior captain Izzy Kittredge was the spark for Medfield with her game-high 28 points, which including three of the team’s eight 3-pointers. Junior captain Tess Baacke and freshman Abby Broderick added 10 points apiece for Medfield.

For South High, the No. 6 seed from Worcester, senior Bryan Bascoes and junior Ava MacCollam had 6 points apiece.

The state championship was the fourth all-time for Medfield, which also won in 2013 and 2017.

Division 3

Sophomore Bella Owumi scored 14 of her game-high 19 points in the first half and No. 1 seed St. Mary’s High School held on down the stretch for a 46-38 victory over No. 2 seed Norwell High School.

The championship was the third in the four years of the statewide tournament for the Spartans, who also edged Rockland in 2022 and Bishop Fenwick in 2023. St. Mary’s is now 6-1 all-time in state finals and also has a co-championship from 2020, when the state finals were canceled because of COVID. The seven state championships is tied for the most in MIAA girls basketball history. 

Owumi scored 7 points in the first quarter as St. Mary’s jumped out to a 16-6 lead and never trailed after that. It was 26-15 at the half and 32-25 through three quarters.

Senior Reese Matela added 9 points and senior Juliana Conte 8 for the Spartans, who finished 24-3.

Sisters Reagan Dowd (senior) and Adrienne Dowd (freshman) each had 10 points to lead the Clippers, who finished 23-2 and fell in the state final for the second time in as many years. Senior Maddie Oliver added 9 points.

ST. MARY’S 46, NORWELL 38

Division 4

Cathedral High School added to its legacy as the No. 1 seed won its third straight state championship and MIAA record-tying seventh overall, rolling past No. 3 seed South Hadley High School for the second time in as many seasons, 68-37.

Senior Hijjan Allen-Paisley had a game-high 20 points for the Panthers, who were 69-49 victors in the same matchup against the Tigers a year before. Junior Tamia Darling added 16 points and senior Malani Smith 14 to the win.

Cathedral led 14-7 after one quarter, and pushed it to 30-17 at the half and 51-32 after three. Including their victory over Wahconah in 2023 (75-53), the Panthers have won six state championship games since 2016, and also shared the state title with Maynard in 2020 when the state finals were canceled because of COVID.

Sophomore Cara Dean led South Hadley with 21 points and sophomore Kate Phillips added 10.

CATHEDRAL 68, SOUTH HADLEY 37

Division 5

Senior captain Ashlyn Lesure scored 18 points and No. 2 seed Hoosac Valley High School rallied in the second half to topple No. 5 seed Renaissance School, 64-57, and repeat as state champion.

After trailing 35-22 at the half, the Hurricanes surged back to within 43-39 after three quarters before continuing their push in the final eight minutes. That gave Hoosac Valley its fourth championship overall, including a 71-53 victory over West Boylston in the 2024 title game.

Sophomore Reagan Shea added 15 points and and senior captain Emma Meczywor 11 points for the Hurricanes.

Renaissance, which was making its first appearance in a state championship game, got a game-high 20 points from eighth-grader Zi’Yan Wallace. Seventh-grader J’Dore Reese added 13 points for the Phoenix.

HOOSAC VALLEY 64, RENAISSANCE 57
