MIAA Rugby State Championships: Belmont girls, Weymouth boys on top again; Boston College High back in winner's circle
MILTON - The MIAA Rugby State Championship matches returned to Curry College to cap the 2024 season, with all three winners adding to their rich championship histories in the sport dating back to 2017.
Here is a look at the action in each of the three divisions.
Division 1 Boys
Boston College High 40, Xaverian Brothers 38 - In a battle of Catholic Conference rivals, the Eagles held off a late comeback attempt by Xaverian and captured the program's fourth championship overall and first since 2021.
Junior Mikey Smith had 2 tries and senior Gavin McNicholl was 5 for 6 on conversion kicks. Senior Greg Matthews, juniors Owen Hurley and Conrad Babka, and freshman Colton Blind also had tries for the Eagles. Junior Luke Bell had two tries and was 4 for 6 on conversions for the Hawks.
Division 1 Girls
Belmont 80, Weymouth 0 - The Marauders continued their dominance of MIAA girls rugby by cruising to the program's sixth consecutive state championship.
Senior Mia Taylor had three tries to lead Belmont, and senior Olivia Mann had a pair of tries. Senior Lucy Kabrhel added a try and was 10 for 12 on conversion kicks.
Division 1 Girls Rugby bracket
Division 2 Boys
Weymouth 34, Hanover 29 - Another top seed continued a championship dynasty as the Wildcats won their third consecutive title by holding off the No. 2 seed Hawks.
Junior Cam Aieta scored his third try with three minutes to play to lift Weymouth to the victory. Junior Naheem Ridore added a pair of tries in the win.
Senior Timothy Carlson had a pair of tries for Hanover, with juniors Love’on Flowers and Max Goitia adding one apiece. Junior Lochlan Garvey was 3 for 4 on conversions.
