Nordic Ski Championships: Mount Greylock Girls, Boys Sweep Team Titles
Mount Greylock Regional School has been a frequent presence atop the podiums on both the boys and girls side of the MIAA Nordic Ski Championships in recent seasons, but it had been eight years since both teams from the school shared the spotlight.
That changed during the 2025 championships held Tuesday, February 12 at Prospect Mountain in Woodford, Vt., as the Mounties swept the first-place trophies for the first time since 2017.
Girls
Mount Greylock repeated its championship from 2024 and earned the 14th overall in program history dating back to 1989. The Mounties finished with 61 points, ahead of a pack that included Amherst Regional (72), the Acton-Nashoba coop (77), Newton South High School (85) and Lenox Memorial High School (89). Lauren Miller was Greylock's top finisher in fifth place overall (26 minutes, 43 seconds).
Hannah Petersen of Brookline High School was the individual champion, covering the Prospect Mountain course in 24:50. Vienna Mahar of Wahconah Regional took second (25:17), followed by Rcahael Strock of Brookline (26:26) and Polina Kontorovich of Newton South (26:36).
Joining Miller as the top four scorers for Mount Greylock were Josie Bay (15th, 27:59), Mia Holmgren (16th, 28:02) and Elizabeth Spelman (25th, 29:10).
Rounding out the top 10 individuals were Lucy Reiner of Lincoln-Sudbury Regional (6th, 27:09), Shay Barnard of Acton-Nashoba (7th, 27:30), Hannah Leese of Newton South (8th, 27:32), Ella Workman of Amherst (9th, 27:37), and Alta Oswald of Winchester High School (10th, 27:37).
Boys
Led by Patrick Holland's runner-up finish, Mount Greylock put three skiers in the top seven overall and earned their third state championship in four years. The Mounties scored 34 points, followed by runner-up Wahconah (55) and Concord-Carlisle High School in third (68). Newton South, which knocked Greylock off the top of the podium in 2024, was fourth overall (90) and Amherst fifth (104).
Fritz Sanders of Wahconah was the individual winner, his time of 20:23 easily outdistancing a pack led by Holland (21:08). Arlington's Mori Finlayson-Johnecheck was third (21:10), and Simon Shin of Mount Greylock fourth (21:33).
Knowl Stroud placed seventh for the Mounties (21:52), who clinched the team title with Ben Mandel's 21st-place finish (23:48).
Newton North teammates Dashiel Martin (21:34) and Levin Brenner (21:50) took fifth and sixth, respectively. Also placing in the top 10 individuals were Adam Synnestvedt of Concord-Carlisle (8th, 22:02), Alex Huesgen of Westford Academy (9th, 22:20), and Concord-Carlisle's Zachary Scopinich-Burgel (10th, 22:21).
