Sectional Swimming: Wellesley, Acton-Boxborough Continue Dominance in Pool

Wellesley High School earned its seventh consecutive MIAA South Girls Fall Swimming championship, while Acton-Boxborough Regional High School made it four in a row in the North during Sectional Championship meets held Sunday, November 3 at MIT.

South Sectional

Wellesley didn't have any first-place finishes in individual or relay events, but used its depth to compile 330 points and end the day atop the 13-team standings. Needham High School was runner-up with 291 points, just ahead of third-place Brookline High School (290).

Serena Loo took second in the 200-yard individual medley (2 minutes, 16.10 seconds) and Elaine Cheng also was runner-up in the 100-yard freestyle (55.57 seconds) to spark the Raiders. Loo also teamed with Sonja Tellanders, Tracey Peng and Alexandra Loo to take second in the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:50.88).

Highlighting Needham's day was a standout performance from Andrea Qie, who won both the 200 individual medley (2:12.04) and 100 butterfly (57.77). Qie also was part of winning efforts in the 200 medley relay (1:54.25) and 400 freestyle relay (3:48.58) for the Rockets.

Among individual boys competitors, Jackson Wagner of Milton and Avneese Shenoy of Walpole each won a pair of events. Wagner took the 200 individual medley (2:00.81) and 100 freestyle (53.00), while Shenoy won thw 100 butterfly (55.38) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.59).

South Results     

North Sectional

Isabela Teixeira was the anchor of Acton-Boxborough's overwhelming victory in the 18-team field. The Revolution earned 315 team points to easily finish ahead of runner-up Winchester High School (230) and third-place Andover High School (217).

Teixeira won the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.52) and 100 butterfly (56.39), and also was part of the A-B foursome along with Caroline Tyrrell, Lucy Tyrrell and anchor Katie Baxter that prevailed in the 200 medley relay.

Lucy Tyrrell added an individual victory in the 100 breaststroke.

Mackenzie Gibbons of Academy of Notre Dame and Sophie Caruso of Haverhill High School tied for first place in the 50 free (24.10). Both also won a second event, as Gibbons captured the 100 backstroke (57.60) and Caruso won the 100 free (53.33).

On the boys side, Jack Ventre of North Andover High School was a double winner in the 100 backstroke (53.41) and 100 butterfly (53.46) while setting meet records in both events. Peter Hong of Billerica Memorial HS also won two events - the 200 individual medley (2:11.62) and 100 breaststroke (1:04.39)
