Division 1-2 Boys Swimming Championships: St. John's Prep Adds To Legacy; Wayland Back on Top

Posted: February 26, 2025

Despite a delay of a week because of the recent winter storm, the MIAA Boys Swimming & Diving 2025 State Championships were held Saturday, February 22 at the Boston University Fitness and Recreation Center (Division 2), and Sunday, February 23 at Phillips Andover (Division 1).

Division 1

Saint John’s Preparatory School more than doubled the points of its closest competition and earned the school’s 17th state championship in 19 years.

The Eagles won only one individual event – clinching the championship with a first in the 400 freestyle relay – but scored enough throughout to compile 330 points. That was well clear of runner-up Westford Academy (161), which just edged out third-place Newton North High School (160).

Quinn Caputo of Newton North was one of the two double-winners, capturing the 200-yard individual medley (1 minute, 51.3 seconds) and 100 backstroke (50.92). WIll Mulgrew of Xaverian Brothers High School won the 200 freestyle (1:41.19) and 500 freestyle (4:31.57).

The St. John’s Prep foursome of freshmen Brendan Titley and Porter Mulgrew, senior Matthew Church and junior Wes Ross won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:12.75).

Titley added a second in the 100 freestyle (47.44) and third in the 200 freestyle 1:42.24), while Mulgrew was second in the 500 freestyle (4:35.05) and third in the 200 IM (1:56.64). Ross added a third-place finish in the 500 free (4:41.63), and the Eagles also took second in the 200 freestyle relay (1:28.92).

Other individual winners included: Jacob Pervier of Gardner High School (50 free, 21.39); Vann Hotchkiss of Needham High School (diving, 562.450 points); Owen Curtin of Westford Academy (100 butterfly, 51.74); Leo Tran of Sharon High School (100 freestyle, 46.86); and Brandon Liu of Framingham High School (100 breaststroke, 57.17).

Catholic Memorial School won the 200 medley relay with juniors Brian Wukitch and Jordan Kinch, senior Olle Lundgren and sophomore Kevin Garvey (1:38.87). Newton North was first in the 200 freestyle relay with senior Cody Wong, juniors Zachary Levinsky and Aidan Furlong, and Caputo (1:28.91).

Division 2

Wayland High School ended Weston High School’s three-year reign atop the podium, as the Warriors compiled 296 points to topple their neighboring rivals, who took second overall (243). Wayland swept all three relays to put the finish touch on their hardware.

The foursome of senior Brady Foley, junior Alex Lu, senior Peter Morris and sophomore Luke Kroncke opened the event by winning the 200 medley relay (1:37.02). Later, it was a 200 freestyle relay win (1:27.97) led by seniors Aidan Huang and Cole Snyder, as well as Lu and Kroncke.

The Warriors then capped the meet by taking gold in the 400 freestyle relay with the all-senior team of Morris, Snyder, Braden Leichliter and Huang (3:16.29).
David Ryu was the top individual finisher for the Warriors, placing second in the 100 breaststroke (59.19).

Senior Nicholas Cavic of Seekonk High School was a double-winner in the 200 freestyle (1:38.30) and 50 free (20.85), and senior Braedon Ando of Grafton High School doubled up in the 200 IM (1:52.45) and 500 freestyle (4:30.05).

Weston’s runner-up finish was sparked by an individual championship from senior Alex Jylkka in the 100 freestyle (47.66). Mystic Valley Charter School was third as a team (180), followed by Grafton (169) and Longmeadow High School (144).

Other individual winners included: sophomore Colin Purcell of Minnechaug Regional (diving, 522.050 points); senior Evan Hong of Longmeadow (100 butterfly, 50.33); senior Dawson Rice of Minnechaug (100 backstroke, 51.18); and senior George Lam of Grafton (100 breaststroke, 59.04).
