Saint Bernard’s High School Student Receives MIAA Student-Athlete of the Month Award March 2024

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association is proud to announce that Elisabeth (Lizzie) Gardiner is the recipient of its Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of March 2024.

A senior at St. Bernard’s High School in Fitchburg, Lizzie has excelled as a student earning a GPA of 3.87 and ranked third in her class. Lizzie received the Smith College Book Award and the ‘Out of the Ordinary” Award from Alfred University, along as the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award from St. Bernard’s in the areas of English, Science, and History.

As an athlete, Lizzie has competed in soccer, basketball, and lacrosse for all four years; captain in all three sports. She has also been the Team MVP in soccer and basketball as well as the Worcester Telegram Hometown Player of the Week twice in Basketball. As Athletic Director and nominator Ray Cosenza commented, “…she has been the model of consistency, kindness, work ethic, leadership, academic excellence, and athletic achievement. In my thirty-eight plus years in the field of education, I have known very few who check all the boxes as well as Lizzie has.”

Lizzie has also been very active serving her community as she volunteers at Habitat for Humanity, tutors students at STB, is a Student Ambassador for the MIAA, and is a volunteer in the Admissions Office at STB. As a Class President and National Honor Society Officer, Lizzie has been a true leader for the Bernardians and grown through her time at STB. According to her teacher and senior class advisor Brendan Kelley, Lizzie has shown great spirit for her school and utilized her creative side to assist the school.

“Selflessly, Elisabeth gives her artistic talent to the community freely and without expectation of praise or compensation. Haven given up the very last week of her summer vacation before her senior year, she volunteered to paint the parking spots of her fellow classmates. She spent several hours for two weekends and three or four weekday afternoons & evenings generously painting spots and giving her exceptional artistic abilities because she simply loves it.

She volunteered on another occasion to create a banner for her class, all on her own, and on another occasion designed a banner for the school store. Art is what truly allows Elisabeth to express herself and she is more than giving of this talent to her friends and school community."
